In Philadelphia, family care often turns into a second shift. You finish work, cross town to a parent's rowhome in the Northeast or South Philly, cook, sort the pills, and come back to do it again tomorrow. A spouse caring for a husband or wife at home rarely gets even that drive. Respite care gives the family caregiver a planned break: a screened Good Hands caregiver steps into your routine at home, so your loved one is covered while you sleep, work, travel, or see your own doctor.
Care starts with a free consultation. A coordinator asks what a normal day looks like, which hours are hardest to cover, and what your loved one needs to feel safe with someone new: routines, mobility, medications, and the topics that calm them. That becomes a written care plan, and a caregiver is matched to it before your first break begins.
Respite can be booked once, for a weekend or a trip, or set as a standing block every week. It is non-medical in-home care, coordinated from our King of Prussia office for families in every Philadelphia neighborhood.
When you need care day and night, we're there!
From aging at home to recovery and long-term conditions, every family's situation is different. We listen first, then build care that fits.
Missed meals, forgotten medications, daily tasks becoming harder. A caregiver brings the right support — without taking away independence.
Healing at home shouldn't feel overwhelming. Hands-on help with mobility, routines, and daily care makes the return smoother for everyone.
Chronic illness or memory changes don't have to mean leaving home. Consistent in-home support keeps comfort, dignity, and connection close.
Every respite visit follows the routine you already have, so your loved one notices a new face, not a new way of doing things.
Taking over your routine: The caregiver follows the schedule written into the care plan, from wake-up time to the evening TV show.
Personal care: Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, at your loved one's pace.
Meals and medication reminders: Cooking familiar meals, encouraging fluids, and prompting prescribed doses on time.
Companionship and supervision: Conversation, short walks, and a watchful presence, so your loved one is never alone while you are out.
Overnight respite: A caregiver stays through the night, so you can sleep without listening for footsteps.
Weekend and travel cover: Continuous care across a weekend, a family event out of town, or a week away, with caregivers in shifts when needed.
Help after a hospital stay: Extra hands in the first days home from the hospital, when family caregivers are stretched the most.
Handing over your keys and your routine takes trust. That trust comes from the right caregiver, a clear plan, and an agency that stays involved while you are away.
One familiar caregiver: We match a caregiver to your loved one and send the same person back for repeat respite visits whenever the schedule allows.
Carefully screened team: Every caregiver passes a criminal background check and a psychological evaluation before entering a client's home.
Backup when plans change: If a caregiver cannot make a shift, our team arranges cover, so your break does not get cancelled.
A written plan for your break: Dates, hours, tasks, and emergency contacts are written into the care plan before the first shift.
A local, accredited agency: We are ACHC accredited, coordinate care for Philadelphia families from King of Prussia, and families rate our care 4.9 out of 5 across 250+ reviews.
Most families call about respite when something has to give. We start with the hours you need back, then build cover around them.
The working caregiver with a second shift: You work all day and spend evenings at a parent's home across the city. A standing weekly block gives you back regular time for rest, errands, and your own family.
The spouse who never leaves the house: Caring for a husband or wife at home can mean months without a full day out. A caregiver covers set hours so you can see friends, keep appointments, and rest.
The family with a trip or surgery ahead: A wedding, a work trip, or your own operation should not depend on who can cover. Planned respite keeps care running at home while you are away or recovering.
Respite care is easy to try. You can book one afternoon first, see how your loved one responds to the caregiver, and add overnight, weekend, or regular weekly cover once everyone is comfortable.

Yes. We arrange in-home respite across Philadelphia, from Center City and South Philadelphia to the Northeast, West, North, and Northwest Philadelphia, including Chestnut Hill, Germantown, Manayunk, and Roxborough. Care is coordinated from our King of Prussia office.
Bookings range from a few hours to several weeks. The schedule is set during the free consultation, based on the tasks your loved one needs and the break you need.
Original Medicare does not pay for non-medical respite care at home. Under the Medicare hospice benefit, a person enrolled in hospice can receive inpatient respite of up to five days at a time so the family caregiver can rest.
PCA runs Pennsylvania's Caregiver Support Program in Philadelphia. Eligible family caregivers can be reimbursed for part of their respite costs, based on household income, and PCA confirms who qualifies.
VA can provide up to 30 days of respite care a year for eligible veterans. Veterans and surviving spouses may also qualify for other VA benefits toward in-home care, which we can talk through during the free consultation.
When a family needs help urgently, our team can often arrange care as soon as the same day. Planned respite for a trip or a surgery is easiest to arrange with a few weeks of notice.
Where the schedule allows, yes. For loved ones living with dementia we treat it as a priority, because a familiar face makes every visit easier.
Yes. Caregivers experienced with memory loss follow the routines and phrases that already work at home, keep watch for wandering, and help keep evenings calm.
Respite care is short-term care that temporarily takes over from a family caregiver, so they can rest, work, travel, or recover. In-home respite care brings a trained caregiver to your loved one's home for an agreed number of hours, nights, or days. Good Hands Home Care provides in-home respite care in Philadelphia with screened caregivers and a written care plan, coordinated from our office in King of Prussia.
The need is large. Philadelphia is home to 322,258 adults over 60, about one in five residents, according to the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. Many of them rely on a spouse, son, or daughter for daily help, and those family caregivers are the people respite care is built for.
Families in Philadelphia can arrange a break in several ways. The table compares the most common options and who they usually suit.
| Option | How it works | Usually best for |
|---|---|---|
| In-home respite by the hour | A caregiver comes to the home for a set block of hours | Regular weekly breaks, appointments, and errands |
| Overnight respite at home | A caregiver stays from evening to morning | Family caregivers who are losing sleep |
| Weekend or travel respite | Continuous care at home for several days, with caregivers in shifts if needed | Trips, family events, or the caregiver's own surgery |
| Adult day services | The older adult spends the day at a licensed center | People who enjoy group activities and can travel to a center |
| Inpatient hospice respite | A short stay in a hospital or facility, up to five days at a time | People enrolled in hospice whose family caregiver needs a break |
Good Hands provides the in-home options. Adult day centers and inpatient hospice respite are arranged through other providers, and our team can help you think through which mix fits your family.
Both give the family caregiver time back, but they suit different people. This comparison helps families choose.
| In-home respite usually works well when | An adult day center may work well when |
|---|---|
| Your loved one is calmer in familiar surroundings | Your loved one enjoys being around other people |
| Leaving the house is hard, for example because of steep rowhome stairs | Getting to and from the center is manageable |
| You need cover in the evening, overnight, or on weekends | You need cover during weekday daytime hours |
| Your loved one needs one-on-one help with personal care | Group supervision is enough during the day |
Respite is not only for emergencies. These are the situations families bring to us most often.
Many family caregivers wait months before asking for a break. These are the concerns we hear most often, and how we answer them.
We often start with a short visit while you are still at home, so the introduction happens on your loved one's terms, and we match caregivers on temperament as well as skills.
Emergency contacts, routines, and what to do if plans change are written into the care plan before the first shift, and our team stays in touch while you are away.
Wanting rest does not mean you have stopped caring. Caregivers who sleep, eat well, and see their own doctor are the ones who can keep going.
Our team handles screening, care planning, scheduling, and backup cover, so arranging a break takes one phone call rather than another project.
Arranging respite care takes four steps, and urgent situations can often be covered the same day.

A coordinator learns your loved one's routine, mobility, and care needs, then writes a care plan with dates, hours, and tasks.
We match a screened caregiver to your loved one and, for repeat respite, keep the same caregiver whenever the schedule allows.
Our team checks in during the booking and adjusts the plan if anything changes while you are away.
Respite care is billed for the hours a caregiver is with your loved one, so the total depends on the schedule you choose. We give every family an exact quote after a free consultation.
Original Medicare does not pay for non-medical respite care at home. The exception is inpatient respite of up to five days at a time for people enrolled in hospice. Our team can talk through which options may apply to you during the free consultation.
Respite often works together with other kinds of support.
